　　据报道，神威·太湖之光的峰值性能(peak performance)为每秒125.436千万亿次浮点(PFlops)，运算速度是天河二号的两倍(twice as fast as Tianhe-2)。据国家超级计算无锡中心主任(head of the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi)杨广文介绍，"简单来说，这套系统1分钟的计算能力，相当于72亿人同时用计算器不间断计算32年(7.2b people using electronic calculators 32 years to do the same calculation);如果用2016年生产的主流笔记本电脑(laptops)或个人台式机(personal desktop computers)作参照，神威·太湖之光相当于200多万台普通电脑。" 该计算机将被应用于飞行器设计等好端制造业(high-end manufacturing)、地球系统建模(Earth-system modeling)与预报天气(weather forecasting)、生命科学(life science)与大数据分析(big data analysis)等领域。
